Description:The basic principles of restorative justice are community protection, competency development, and accountability. During the trial, the judge and the student jury question defendants, and ultimately render a verdict and suggest a sentence. He skillfully strikes a balance between making the defendant feel comfortable and exposing students to the courts. USC Gould student Ariana Sanudo-Kretzmann, the community service chair for the association, met with a jury of high school students and helped them in weighing several factors before finding the defendant guilty and providing sentencing recommendations. Adult volunteers serve as trainers, advisors and coordinators of the teen courts; some courts have a small paid staff. Other courts employ different structures, such as a judge-panel model which includes a panel of 3 to 6 youth judges who collectively hear, deliberate, and sentence the offender.
